The Art of Asemic Writing

With Lisa Agaran

Asemic writing is a form of mark-making that resembles handwriting but carries no literal language or defined meaning. Through scribbles, scratches, brushstrokes, symbols, or stitched marks, asemic writing invites you to create without needing to say anything at all.

These marks function as visual elements, often used in mixed media and abstract work to add rhythm, movement, and texture.

What makes asemic writing especially powerful is its simplicity. The practice returns us to a time before words were assigned meaning, before writing became structured or evaluated. It reconnects us with a more instinctual, childlike form of expression, where the body leads and the mind can soften its grip.

Because asemic writing often involves repetition and flow, it naturally becomes a mindful and meditative practice. The hand moves, the marks accumulate, and attention settles into the present moment. There is no message to communicate, no interpretation required. Only the experience of making.
In this self-paced course, you’ll explore a variety of tools and techniques to create different styles of asemic writing. You’ll experiment with altering pressure, speed, scale, and movement to shift the mood and visual language of your marks. These created pieces will then be used as collage elements, layered together to form an abstract composition.

No art experience is necessary. This course is an invitation to let go of meaning, trust your instincts, and allow creativity to move through you freely. Asemic writing becomes both a visual practice and a quiet conversation with your creative spirit.

Create Your Own Meditative Book
Because asemic writing naturally invites rhythm, repetition, and presence, it can also become a powerful way to soothe the nervous system and gently release mental tension. When the hands are engaged and the mind is free from meaning-making, the body has an opportunity to settle.

In this bonus tutorial, you’ll learn how to create a simple, handmade booklet designed specifically for your asemic writing practice. This small book becomes a personal container, a place where you can return again and again to mark-making as a form of grounding and self-regulation.

You’ll be guided step-by-step through an easy bookmaking process that requires no prior experience. Once your booklet is complete, Lisa will lead you through a meditative asemic writing practice, showing you how to use this quiet, repetitive art form as a way to calm the nervous system and reconnect with your inner rhythm.

This bonus invites you to slow down, work with your hands, and create a portable space for mindful creativity. Your meditative book becomes both an art object and a gentle practice you can return to whenever you need a moment of calm and presence.
